Universal Declaration of Human Rights

A declaration known as United Declaration of Human Rights was adopted at the United Nations General Assembly in Paris.

 This declaration took place at the Palais de Chaillot on 10th December 1948; was the most widely translated document in the world as it has been translated into at least 375 dialects and languages. Around 50 countries across the globe voted in favor of the declaration.

The Universal Declaration of Human Rights declares a preamble comprising of seven statements: 

  • The first and foremost statement asserts that recognition of everyone’s self-esteem is the building block of peace and justice across the globe.
  • The second statement asserts that violation of human rights have hurt and outraged the inner heart of mankind.
  • The third statement states the protection of human rights and freedom by regulation of law.
  • The fourth statement states that human rights are the basis of developing cordial relationship between different nations.
  • The fifth statement relates the declaration to United Nations Charter that believes in worth and respect of the people.
  • The sixth statement notes that every member of United Nations has promised themselves to promote human rights and achieve fundamental freedom.
  • The seventh statement depicts the importance of understanding the rights and freedom.
The declaration recognizes specific human rights such as right to liberty, equality, dignity and life. Every individual is equal before the law regardless of their religion, color and language. Everyone has the right to enjoy freedom of thought, freedom of religion and freedom of expression. Every individual has a right to nationality, right to education and right to work. The declaration also emphasizes that no individual should be subjected to torture or inhumane treatment. Right to own property is also embedded in the declaration. The declaration strives to uphold the dignity of human being for the creation of better future. The adoption of the declaration on 10th December marks an important international Day and is celebrated as “Human Rights Day”. The declaration completed its 60th anniversary in the year 2008 and the year celebrated various activities around the theme “Justice and Dignity for all”.
