Every human being has the right to work for a basic living wage and cannot be prevented from doing so. Right to work is closely related to right to food, right to life and right to education.
In fact, unemployment is the main cause of extensive starvation and poverty around the world. The right to work brings security in people’s lives. Everyone, without any discrimination (sex, color, religion, nationality, language, social origin), has the right to equal pay for equal work. Performing some work means carrying out some actions that will assure desires and create services for your group and society, and it is therefore, acknowledged and pleased.
The right to work is preserved in the UDHR (Universal Declaration of Human Rights) and recognized in international human rights law through its inclusion in the ICESCR (International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights).
- According to the Article 23.1 of the UDHR, “Everyone has the right to work, to free choice of employment, to just and good conditions of work and to protection against unemployment.”
- According to the Article 15 of African Charter on Human and People Rights, “Everyone has the right to work under impartial and suitable conditions, and shall receive equal pay for equal work.”
- According to the Article 6 of ICESCR :
- Everyone has right to gain his living by work which he freely accepts, and will take suitable actions to maintain it.
- Full understanding of this right shall include vocational and technical assistance, training programs, procedures and strategies to achieve stable growth (Social, Economic and Cultural).
The Brezhnev Constitution (1977 Soviet Constitution) emphasizes more on the conditions of work, labor rights, and revered to economic, social and cultural development.
According to Article 40 USSR Citizens:
- Have the right to rest and leisure.
- Working hours per week should not exceed 41 hours.
- Shorter working day in a number of trade and industries.
- Provisions of paid annual holiday.
- Weekly days of rest.
- Expansion of the network of educational, civilization, cultural, and health-building institutions.
- Growth on a large-scale of physical culture, sport, and tourism and camping.
