Rights to Survival

The right to life can also be referred as the right to survival. Everyone has the right to life, liberty and security. Right to life and liberty describes that a human being has an important right to live with freedom.

It debates on the issues of war, euthanasia (intention of killing people), capital punishment, abortion and self-defense. Human being has the right not to be killed by another human being. Human rights law already outlaws the use of the death penalty for persons under age 18.

Right to life and liberty is recognized by many international organizations like:

  1. The Universal Declaration of Human Rights (in 1948) declared in Article 3 that everyone has the right to life, liberty and security.
  2. The European Convention on Human Rights declared (in 1950) in Article 2 that every human being has right to live and also outlaw the capital punishment except in time of emergency or war.
  3. The United States Declaration of Independence (in 1776) affirmed that human beings are endowed with right to life and liberty.
  4. The International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (in 1966) acknowledged in Article 6.1 that “Every person has the inborn right to life. This right shall be secluded by the government. No one should be killed without any proper reason.”

Right to life is violated in many cases like :

  1. Death Penalty or Capital punishment given to children or pregnant women.
  2. Warfare and violence i.e. situations of armed conflict.
  3. Giving threat to asylum seekers and refugees.
  4. Internal conflict
  5. Violations of the right by non-state agent.

There is some debate on fundamental right to life. Abortion rights campaigner dispute that prenatal humans are not human persons and do not have the same fundamental “right to life” as humans after birth. Senator Barack Obama and Senator Joe Biden took this view in 2008 election.
