Need of Human Rights

The greatest desire of every person is to lead a life where he can enjoy freedom of speech and freedom of thought. Every person aspires to live a life where he or she has no fear of injustice and suppression. The need of human rights is significant in order to ensure that people receive humane treatment. Human being gives importance to human values such as identity, belonging and dignity. These human values can be achieved by securing human rights.

The need of human rights is essential in order to promote equality, peace and security around the world. Human rights education is being emphasized in the United Declaration of human rights and other international treaties and documents. Such education will help in promoting equality among all nations. Human rights education will help in reducing human rights violations and contribute in creating an environment of justice, freedom and peace.

The primary goal of human rights protection is to ensure that the voices of the weakest are heard. As rightly quoted by Mahatma Gandhi “My notion of democracy is that under it the weakest should have the same opportunity as the strongest.” The need for human rights protection is to retain the dignity of every individual and to achieve the core values of human rights such as freedom, equality and security.

After the World War II was over, it was realized that people belonging to many countries were living under fear of violence and under the control of tyrants. This adverse situation led the majority of governments across the globe to come to the inference that basic human rights must be protected. Human rights have the potential to foster the development of the nation and achieve safe living conditions for every individual.

In South Africa, there is a system of legal racial separation known as Apartheid, under which the rights of the majority of black people are curtailed. The white government had put many efforts to drive the black people out of their country. Apartheid policies had violated the human rights of black people. Indeed these policies were a crime against humanity. The objective of good government should be the happiness and care of their citizens and not their destruction. Thus, protecting our own rights is the greatest need of this era.
