Human Rights Watch is an international NGO that conducts research and advocates on human rights. It was formerly known as Helsinki Watch. Its headquarter is in New York City with offices located in Washington D C, Toronto, Tokyo, San Francisco, Paris, Moscow, Los Angeles, London, Johannesburg, Geneva, Chicago, Berlin, Brussels.
Human Rights Watch was set up in 1978 as Helsinki Watch to monitor compliance with Helsinki Accords of the USSR. Helsinki Watch was renamed as Human Rights Watch in 1988. Kenneth Roth is the Executive Director of the Human Rights Watch. Helsinki Watch adopted a technique with policymakers of openly “naming and shaming” foul Governments through media and direct exchange.
In 1980s the Watch contributed to the transformations of democratic region. America Watch founded in 1981, Asia Watch founded in 1985, Africa Watch founded in 1988 and Middle East Watch founded in 1989 were added to “The Watch Committees”. All of these committees were merged under one roof in 1988 to form Human Rights Watch.
Human Rights Watch advocates liberty concerned with fundamentals of human rights. The HRW opposes violations of basic human rights such as discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation. The HRW publishes research reports on violations of international human rights. These HRW’s reports are used to draw worldwide attention to abuses and pressuring Government and worldwide organizations reform. The researchers of the HRW conduct fact finding event to examine suspect state of affairs and publish reporting in local and global media. The reports of the Human Rights Watch include: torture, political corruption, and military use of children, the legalization of abortion, social and gender discrimination, abuses in criminal justice system.
Human Rights Watch reports violations of worldwide humanitarian law. The HRW also supports writers globally who are being victimized for their work. The activists around the world are conferred Human Rights Defenders Award by the Human Rights Watch, who exhibits courage and leadership in protecting human rights. The Human Rights Watch works closely with the award winners in divulging human rights abuses.
The HRW has more than 275 human rights professionals consisting of academician, lawyers and journalists.Human Rights Watch received the donations of approximately US$ 44 million in 2008.The HRW publishes reports on numerous topics and compiles its “World Report” presenting an overview of the state of international human rights.The HRW and the AI are the only two western based worldwide human rights organization operating globally.
