Since 1945, it has given shelter to half a million people.

Recently, Australia has developed a few of the toughest policies on the planet on refuge seekers who came into Australia unlawfully, in spite of the fact that a few people attempted to claim shelter in Australia than in European and North American Country.

The country assigns all unlawful shelter seekers to one of 6 custody centers situated all over the country. The shelters seekers have to wait for an indefinite period for their refuge requests to be processed by the Government. They waited as long as 5 years only to be sheltered.

There were people who rejected to turn back were detained on the underprivileged Pacific Islands of Nauru, Kiribati and Papua New Guinea where they waited for their refuge requests to be processed.

After riots, attempted suicides and group hunger strikes in custody centers, the United Nations inspected the situation of the centers. The UN published a report in June 2002 which stated that Australia was creating very melancholy among shelter seekers by holding them for an indefinite period. The United Nations Human Rights Commission also reported that it was a concern about the indefinite length of custody and conditions of the detention camps. An autonomous Government watchdog in Australia in October 2002, ordered immigration officials to justify the policy of custody of child shelter seekers.
