Amnesty International (AI) Australia is campaigning for asylum seekers in Australia since 1993 when binding detention was adopted, and has also been a part of numerous worldwide refugee campaigns.
Since 2000, Amnesty International Australia has been engaged in refugee campaign, as an increase of Afghan and Iraqi shelter seekers led to a sharp increase in the number of people, as well as children, held in custody. Ever since, the movement has helped to create many constructive changes to the Australian asylum seekers system.
The Howard Government amended its compulsory imprisonment regime in July 2005 and freed children, their friends and relatives from imprisonment. Of late, with the voting of the ALP Government, the AI Australia has been pleased to see the termination of the Pacific Solution with the shutting down of the shelter seeker processing centre on the island of Nauru, and the stop of Temporary Protection Visas.
