Inter American Commission on Human Rights

In United States there is an independent organ of the Organization of American States known as “Inter –American Commission on Human Rights” motivated to protect and promote human rights. The organization was created in the year 1959. The headquarters of this organization is positioned in Washington, D.C.

This organization is a permanent group which meets more than a few times in a year to scrutinize allegations of the violation of human rights in the hemisphere. The aim of the American Convention on Human Rights is to strengthen a system of social justice and equality. The Inter –American Commission on Human Rights has the responsibility of fulfillment or observance with the Convention.

The prime duty of IACHR is the promotion of human rights in the United States. In quest of this duty; it has to carry out various tasks such as : Encouraging knowledge and awareness about the fundamental human rights and related issues in the United States, investigating specific cases of human rights, monitoring the human rights condition in the OAS’s states and, whenever required preparing human rights reports, conducting seminars and meetings with NGOs, educational institutions, governments etc. to inform and elevate awareness about issues of human rights, holding legal action against violation of human rights before the court, performing on – site visits to observe general human rights situation of members, working to resolve appeal (petitions) in a mutual way that is agreeable to both parties etc. This organization was established with the core purpose of protecting the human rights of citizens of the United States. It is one of the organizations encompassing Inter- American system for the promotion of human rights in the hemisphere.
